On August 12, 1997, about five weeks after Dr. Walsh took the photos on this page, a flash flood killed 11 hikers in Antelope Slot Canyon where he and his wife Doris had been hiking. The rains that caused the 10 foot plus wall of water to race like a freight train through the canyon originated on higher ground over ten miles away. As you can see in the last photo from Newsweek©, the canyon is literally an extremely narrow water carved slot in a 100 foot plus mound of sandstone. Thus, the same forces that created the extraordinary shapes within the canyon and the opportunity to extract wonderful images when the light is right are the same forces that can be deadly when they arrive unexpectedly.
