Reading AssignmentS for Dr. Anthony Walsh's Introduction to Psychology Quiz #1 on Phineas Gage

The reading assignments to be used for Quiz #1 are focused on the strange and famous story of Phineas Gage of Cavendish, VT. For this quiz you are asked to read:

  • Dr. Walsh's Gage Page and
  • Phineas Gage in Wikipedia, Sections 1 ~ 4 only for the Quiz. Read the others if you are interested.

    NOTE: The video reenactment of the Gage event shown in class is viewable as often as you like on line 24/7 via the university "course reserves" portal here and contains material which also may be included on the quiz. At the electronic reserves portal site, select Professor, enter Walsh &then choose me, select Introduction to Psychology, and then The Story of Phineas Gage(at the bottom of the list). Enter your name, your access bar code from your university photo ID, and then enter the password PSY100, PSY in caps.

    The following are also recommended although not required for the quiz:

  • Dr. Malcolm Macmillan, the leading Gage authority, maintains a Gage focused web site here .
  • Listen to a BBC Reporter's account of the case here including excerpts from Banjo Dan's Vocal Ballad about Gage's case.
  • Dr. Paul I. Yakovlev has also written about The "Crowbar Skull" ~by the former curator of the Warren Anatomical Museum at Harvard Medical School where Gage's skull & the "crowbar" reside.
