The study of psychology is the study of behavior, and Dr. Caroline Salvatore says students can benefit from this knowledge in a wide range of professions, from business to law to nursing and education. "It's always helpful to know more about how personality develops and how to interact with people." Having taught at Salve Regina since 1976, Dr. Salvatore has found that students have also benefited indirectly from psychology lectures and discussions. "I received a note from a student years after her graduation. She said that, after we discussed divorce in class, she finally realized, after many years, that it had not been her fault." With this tremendous burden of guilt lifted, the student was able to concentrate better in classes and, after graduation, pursue a career in human resources with vigor and joy. "Often, you don't know whom you are touching the most."
Dr. Salvatore's research covers areas as diverse as school age children and their development of concepts, introversion in college students, study habits of college students and physician interviewing styles and their impact on patient satisfaction. She has served as a counselor for emotionally disturbed children in summer camps and has conducted workshops for clergy on dealing with stress. Originally an English major, this native of Boston's West End gravitated toward psychology in undergraduate school after realizing that her interest in stories was primarily in characters and their behavior. Dr. Salvatore, as a grandmother of eight, spends many off?campus hours with her family. She is an avid fan of crossword puzzles, reading, music, especially Baroque classical, and walking on the beach. [ blue faced text from a recent university publicity brochure ]

Dr. Salvatore earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island.

This page is not an official page of Salve Regina University. It was created--and is still maintained-- for the Department of Psychology by Anthony A. Walsh to be a part of a larger web site devoted to psychology and other matters that he first put on line in January, 1996. These redesigned pages went on line November 5th, 1999.
