| March 20, 2001, Newport, RI : Professor Caroline Salvatore's History and Systemsclass was honored today with an unexpected visit from Edward Bradford Titchener, born in Chichester, England in 1867( he died in 1927, but that story is for another day). Titchener, reincarnated in the flesh by Professor Paula Martasian(at right), dazzled his audience with an account of his structuralist psychology tenets and reminded students that if they were genuinely interested in psychology they should stay put, but if they were interested in children or animals they should leave and join the education and biology departments or some other spurious discipline. Students engaged in a practice session employing his principle research method called introspection. Upon completing his lecture, and in true Titchenerian fashion, Titchener entertained no questions from his auditors and exited "stage right" immediately upon completing his closing comments. : Psychology Club President, Katie Manning, has just informed the Department that Brian Becker(2002) has been awarded a "grant" from the club to offset the costs of his attending the Eastern Psychological Association annual convention in Washington, D.C., April 20th to 22nd. Brian, who is a psychology major working on a research project he hopes to present at the EPA Convention in Boston, MA in the Spring, 2002, is attending this year's convention to "scope it out" so to speak, i.e., learn what he may be up against when putting his research presentation together, and in general to discover what a psychology convention is all about while meeting and talking to other undergraduate psychology majors like himself. We wish him a safe and instructive trip.

| October 30, 2000, Newport, RI : In preparation for the new university catalogue, the Psychology Department is reexamining admission requirements, course descriptions, prerequisites to courses, new course additions, and other matters related to our program. As a result of recent action, changes in the requirements to declare a major in psychology are being eased, i.e., made less restrictive. Freshman, for example, who have a C+ in PSY 100 mid-term and others who may have completed PSY 100(or another PSY course or courses) with a C+(or 2.3 average), may now declare their major with Dr. Walsh. Students no longer need to complete PSY 102 with a C+ average in combination with PSY 100 before declaring their major. The requirement which states that no grade less than a C in a PSY course may count toward the major and that a C+(2.3) average for graduation is required has also been modified. A C+(2.3) average is still required but students may offset a C- or D grade with higher grades as long as the GPA of 2.3 is maintained. However, no more than two D grades may count toward graduation with a Major in psychology.
For the time being, PSY 102 will remain a requirement for majors; however, this requirement is currently(May, 2001) under review.
Beginning in the Fall, 2001, all 200 level courses will require PSY 100 as a prerequisite(currently it is only "recommended"). PSY 260 will now be a required course in its own right and will no longer be paired with PSY 280. PSY 280, Abnormal Psychology, will no longer be required, will become PSY 380 in the new catalogue, and will require PSY 260, Theories of Personality, and two other PSY courses as prerequisites. Three hundred level courses will require 3 PSY courses as prerequisites, replacing the current prerequistes which are: PSY 102 and one other PSY course.
Additional changes will be announced as they develop. If you have questions, contact Dr. Walsh at Extension 3120or via e-mail.
