Brian Becker(2002) at his research presentation at the Eastern Psychological Association Convention in Boston in March, 2002. Click on the image for a larger view April 3, 2002, Newport, RI : Brian Becker(2002), senior psychology major, had the honor of being on the formal program of the Eastern Psychological Association annual convention held from March 7th to March 10th in Boston, Massachusetts. His research findings which were presented there grew out of an independent study over several semesters with Dr. Arthur Frankel. Brian's "poster session" entitled The Effects Gender and Mood on Risk-Taking Helping was very well received. Several other psychology majors from Salve including Brendon Ristaino also attended. It is not an easy task to get on the formal annual program of an organization the size of EPA so we are all quite proud of Brian's achievement.

April 3, 2002, Newport, RI : The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shelia O'Brien Quinn to commence in the Fall Semester, 2002. Dr. Quinn will be teaching our Child Development course in the Fall, 2002 and a new course for us in one of her specialty areas, viz., The Psychology of Language. Dr. Shelia O'Brien Quinn~Dr. Quinn will join our department on a full-time basis commencing in the Fall, 2002
In addition to her years of teaching experience, Dr. Quinn brings a rich background in community settings where psychological principles are applied directly to the amelioration of human problems. She has been a Special Education Advocate for the state of Rhode Island; a Research Associate with the Spina Bifada Association; a School Psychologist in the Connecticut Public Schools(1986-1998); and a Special Education Teacher for the Trudeau Center in Warwick, RI. We are delighted to have her join us here at Salve Regina University and look forward to her making a valuable and unique contribution to our undergraduate program.

April 3, 2002, Newport, RI : The Department of Psychology announces with a profound sense of sadness the retirement of Dr. Caroline Salvatore at the end of the current academic year. Dr. Salvatore, who has been a member of the department since the mid-1970s, expressed the wish to spend more time with her family especially her grand children, catch up on her reading, and relax. We are fortunate, however, to be able to add that she will continue, from time to time, to teach for us on a part-time basis and will do so beginning this fall when she will teach the Advanced General Psychology and Brain and Behavior classes for us. We all wish her well with the hope that the wonderful leisure she is about to acquire will be rejuvenating.

September 19, 2001, Newport, RI : The department has received its first communication from Fr. Michael Malone, Assistant Professor of Psychology, from the heart of Africa where he is spending this semester. He writes: "I have been teaching since 18th August....[ he describes his students and his classes and then adds...]I have just come back from a 600 mile safari with one of Kenya's politicians. We were accompanied by two body guards armed with two shotguns. He himself carried a mysterious little bag which looked suspiciously like a holster. They drove a large Mercedes at speeds exceeding the sound barrier, especially through populated areas. On Sunday I led my protectors to church and later had lunch out in a mission run by the Italian fathers.(rabbit and soup???????) My research could not reveal any information on the previous existence of the rabbit, but hoped between gulps of soup that it had not been somebody's pet. The politician announced that rabbits are women's food and refused to touch same. Photo of Fr. Michael Malone
I was indeed happy to return last night as I became convinced if the assassins did not get me the body guards with loaded guns in the car certainly would. Thank God we did not have an accident.
Signed: Regards to All. Fr. Malone
