| April 23, 2004, Newport, RI : Jennifer Cole(2004)(below left), Vice President of Psi Chi and Lindsey Taggart(2005)(below right), Psi Chi President, pack books that were collected with the Psychology Club for the adolescent boys wilderness education program, Camp E-Hun-Tee, in western Rhode Island. This camp is part of the Eckerd Youth Alternatives group of schools for adolescents at risk. According to their web site, "The Eckerd Wilderness Educational System (EWES) provides behavioral treatment in an outdoor setting via 18 camps in seven states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Tennessee and Vermont. It combines a fully accredited educational component with group and individual counseling, adventure programs and relationship- and communication-building skills." Students live in tents, cook their own meals, and otherwise fend for themselves out-of-doors throughout the year. Since they live in a completely rustic setting without such simple diversions as television, they spend much of their free time reading. Psychology students collected about 100 books to donate to the Camp E-Hun-Tee library. They will deliver them personally this week. |

| March 19, 2004, Newport, RI :Maureen Carlin(2005) and Amy Welch(2004) have had their research poster accepted for the 16th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Society to be held in Chicago, Illinois, May 27 ~ May 30, 2004. This is the second year in a row that psychology majors from Salve have been accepted on the program(read about last year's participants here). The abstract of their research reads: "Although previous research has shown men speak more than women, this study examining two popular television dramas did not confirm that result. Neither CSI: Crime Scene Investigation nor Six Feet Under showed the expected sex difference in total speaking time. Implications of this misrepresentation will be discussed."
This research, conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sheila Quinn, has also been accepted on the program of the Rhode Island Teachers of Psychology (RITOP) annual convention to be held at Johnson and Wales University in Providence on April 23rd.

Congratulations Maureen and Amy! We are sure you will represent us all very well.

| March 19, 2004, Newport, RI : Dr. Walsh has just heard from alumnus Melissa Baird(2003) who described some of her recent activities. She writes: "I am currently working as a senior residential counselor with CASCAP, Inc. I
work at a program called Somerville Place, located in (where else)
Somerville. I work in an eight person DMH funded group home with adults with
various psychological diagnoses (mostly schizophrenics). My house is
transitional housing and most of the residents here are pretty high
functioning at baseline. I dispense medications and support the residents
in their daily lives. I have "keypeople" who I work more directly with on
various goals such as ADLs, money management, self-medication, vocational
training, and anger management.
| |
I have been working here for a little over a
year now. It is a good job, however, I still keep my eyes out for job
openings.
I would like to work with children again. Through my job here I have
discovered that I like working with children more than adults. I have also
learned that I prefer a DMR population rather than DMH. I am currently
looking for a job working with this type of population. Another area that I
am interested in is research. I would like to get a research assistant
position and increase my skills in that area.
I also would like to go to graduate school. I miss school greatly." It certainly sounds to me as if Melissa is able to use her psychology background where she is working. We are proud of her accomplishments, of course, and wish her continued success. [aaw] |

November 25, 2003, Newport, RI :Christina Nordstrom(2003) conatacted Dr. Walsh recently
with an update on her current activities in graduate school at Springfield College in western
Massachusetts. She wrote: "I ...[am currently attending] Springfield
College ...[in] the Clinical
Mental Health Counseling Program. I am going there to get my
masters, and I love it. It is a great program and the teachers are
wonderful. I am having so much fun in my classes and with my
professors. My program has about 16 people and we are all friends.
We go to my professors houses to hang out and discuss our research
projects. It is a lot of work...I just e-mailed Dr. Martasian too,
and told her how I have three research proposals, a literature
review, and two other psych papers all due in three weeks. It is
very overwhelming but I know it will be worth it in the end.
|
| I'm living at home in
Wilbraham with my parents, and I'm really enjoying it. I am also
working at Providence
Hospital in Holyoke as a mental health counselor on the Detox
floor. I work there per diem, so I'm keeping busy."
We are all delighted to learn that Christina is doing so well
and, of course, wish her all the best as she continues her studies
toward her master's degree. We are confident that she will do well
representing our department and our university on the Springfield
campus. |

|

Crime(NCAVC). Her organization combines
investigative/operational support functions, research, and training
in order to provide assistance to federal, state, local, and foreign
law inforcement agencies investigating unusual, bizarre, or
repetitive violent crimes. She received her career training at The FBI
Academy in Quanitio, Virginia.
On Thursday, November 13th, Dr. Thomas J. Guilmette, a forensic

| November 10, 2003, Newport, RI :On Friday and Saturday, November 7th and 8th, seven Salve
psychology majors and Dr. Sheila O'Brien Quinn traveled north to Salem State College in Salem, MA to attend and
participate in the Proceedings of the 43rd Annual Meeting of the
New England Psychological Association. And, "participate" they
did!
Dr. Quinn was the senior author along with junior authors Kiyoko
Koganei(2003), Jennifer Cole, and Sayaka Miyashita of a paper
presented there entitled Does Changing Orthography Change the
Stroop Effect for Numbers? [You better ask them if it does or
does not.] |

 |
 |
Alexandra White was on the program by
herself at a "poster session" where she reported the results of her
research in a project entitled An Experimental Study on the
Relationship Between False Memory and Education. Alexandra's
research was conducted at Salve under the guidance of Dr. Arthur
Frankel. Mary Cordeau, Katelyn McGuire, Jennifer Sousa and Heidi
Sarles(all members of the class of 2006) prepared and presented a
poster entitled Grade Differences in the Accuracy of Response to
the Stroop Word Test. Their poster, sponsored by Dr. Quinn, was
based in part upon an earlier unpublished project which had involved
several persons outside Salve in the local community with whom Dr.
Quinn had become affiliated.
Finally, and, if that were not enough, Dr. Quinn was re-elected
to the steering committee of the New
England Psychological Association AND appointed Chair of the
University Liaisons Committee where she will be responsible
for facilitating communication between the New England
Psychological Association and its affiliated universities.

October 31, 2003, 2003, Newport, RI : On Thursday evening, October 30th, the night
before Halloween, Andrea Tuliano and Gina Liguori hosted a "pot
luck" pasta party for their psychology major friends, faculty, and
other friends. Featured on the menu was Gina's "signature" OLD WORLD
authentic indisputably REAL home made Italian pasta
"gravy." For those not in the know, real Italian families do not
call that red tomato-based stuff you put over the pasta ...sauce...
but instead, refer to it as "gravy." Well, Gina's "gravy" was to die
for. Menu items included linguine with Italian sausages &
"gravy," baked ziti, chicken cacciatore, fried mozzarella sticks,
sauteed peppers, and good Italian bread. Desserts included special
cookies made by Dr. Martasian, ice cream, Oreos, chocolate chip
cookies, and (Yuck!) a surprise Jell-0
Brain made by Dr. Walsh, which, when dissected properly and
topped with a dapple of Cool Whip was just the tastiest! Following
dinner, the movie A Beautiful Mind was shown. A great time
was had by all. |
