Acquisition, Extinction, & Spontaneous Recovery in Classical Conditioning

During the acquisition phase of Classical Conditioning, the strength of learning can be demonstrated by the increasing volume of saliva that occurs with repeated pairings of CS & UCS. The learned association between the CS and the UCS increases rapidly in the beginning and then levels off. When the CS is presented alone after acquisition training, the conditioned reflex(CR) can be seen initially;however, with repeated presentations of the CS alone, extinction occurs represented by the reduction in strength of the salivary response. A further phenomenon can be demonstrated if a conditioned animal is allowed to rest following extinction. The phenomenon is called spontaneous recovery and it refers to the reoccurrence of a CR following extinction which in turn had been followed by rest. [ aaw, 991101 ]
